For almost 50 years, Gatorade’s marketing machine has been working to make you thirsty. You can lead a man to water, but you can’t make him drink. Add sugar, salt, artificial flavors and a good story, and he’ll drink himself to death. http://journal.crossfit.com/2015/08/a-sticky-story.tpl
Those that know me will know that I love my coffee. Those that are fellow coffee geeks/snobs will agree that single origin (or ‘posh’ coffee) is better than instant, and this is true in more ways than just the taste.
For those of you that think ‘coffee is coffee’, this simply isn’t true, there are significantly more benefits to drinking fresh, single bean coffee, as opposed to the freeze dried blended s*** you buy from supermarkets. Below are several reasons why coffee not only tastes amazing, but is also great for you.
1. Improved energy levels and brain function
This one may seem obvious. Why else do we drink coffee? Usually to get us going in the morning or when we need a ‘perk’ or lift during the day. This is because caffeine blocks the inhibitory neurotransmitter Adenosine and this causes an increase in the production of Dopamine and Norepinephrine. This can lead to improved mood, memory, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times, and general cognitive function!
2. Lower risk of degenerative diseases
According to several studies, drinking coffee can actually lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, and even certain types of cancer.
This is due to not only the high antioxidant content of coffee, but also the high level of essential nutrients including Riboflavin, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium, Niacin, and Pantothenic Acid.
3. Weight loss and better gym performance
Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, causing it to send signals to the fat cells telling them to break down body fat. These fatty acids are then able to be utilised by the body for fuel during exercise.
Caffeine also increases the levels of Adrenaline in the blood, which is our ‘fight or flight’ hormone that prepares us for intense physical activity. No wonder that the active ingredient in most ‘pre workout’ supplements is caffeine anhydrous mixed with concentrated doses of creatine anhydrous!
If you want the kick without the crash, a good cup of java about 30 mins pre training will sort you out
4. Coffee helps you live longer
That’s right, coffee drinkers are actually harder to kill. Given the proof that it helps reduce certain degenerative diseases and conditions, this may seem an obvious point.
In two very large studies, drinking coffee was associated with a 20% lower risk of death in men and a 26% lower risk of death in women, over a period of 18-24 years.
This effect appears to be particularly strong in type II diabetics. In one study, diabetics who drank coffee had a 30% lower risk of death during a 20 year study period.
So there you have it, not only does coffee taste great, it also has several benefits to general health and exercise.
Just try to remember not to overindulge, as I do sometimes, over consumption of coffee can cause the adrenal glands to shut down entirely, making you completely reliant on caffeine for energy and function. When this happens, it is good to perform a ‘caffeine reset’ where you abstain for at least 3 days. Then, when your body has recovered, you will start to enjoy the energy kick benefits of coffee again in a good way.
