Cinnamon – The Secret Sweetener
Many people these days are reaching for Stevia as a healthier option to everyday sugar to sweeten up their lives, but my “go to” sweetener is always cinnamon. Cinnamon is a spice that comes from the branches of wild trees that belong to the genus “Cinnamomum” – native to the Caribbean, South America, and Southeast Asia so it is all natural and unprocessed (2). Modern research indicates that this spice may have some very beneficial properties. Diets rich in cinnamon have been shown to help reduce the body’s negative responses to eating high-fat meals.Cinnamon can also help to lower blood sugar in people with diabetes and may help to improve glucose and lipid levels (3). Tel Aviv University researchers discovered that cinnamon may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, a study of Indian medicinal plants revealed that cinnamon can be effective in treating HIV(4). Lastly, according to a neurological scientist at Rush University Medical Center, cinnamon may help deter the degenerative effects of multiple sclerosis (5). As you can see, there are huge advantages to adding cinnamon into our diets.
