Marcela Perea, Founder and Personal Trainer, CrossFit 100
Hola and Hello! My name is Marcela Perea. I am Colombian and moved from Paris to the US in 1996. I’m married with four great kids. In 2009 I got my AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) Certification and started training clients. The year of 2009 was when I left my career as a fashion designer to pursue my true passion – fitness – full time. Soon after, my clients’ enthusiasm and successes demanded further fitness offerings, so I began teaching small group boot camps. It was around that time that I discovered and fell in love with CrossFit.
In 2010, I achieved my Level 1 CrossFit Certification and began implementing some CrossFit workouts into my boot camps and personal training sessions. I felt so strongly about the benefits of CrossFit that I decided to get to get all the certifications I could and always working on getting more. I am truly a CrossFit certification junkie! CrossFit has certainly changed my life in a big way. It is fun, challenging, and effective for me, and my clients. Once you see the benefits of CrossFit, I know you will feel the same way.
For a long time I considered myself a “gym rat”. You could find me in the weight room, the cardio machines, in Spin class just about every day of the week. After having two kids, I was still plugging along doing the same boring routine when I given a challenge by a family member to complete a triathlon. I started participating in both triathlon and running events in 2004 and have completed a variety of sprint and half ironman distance triathlon, as well as cycling events, half marathons, 10K and 5K races, with a full marathon on the horizon in 2012. In 2005 I began to help others achieve their triathlon goals from the coaching side as part of a team of coaches providing group training for women.
In the background was always my love for strength training which was taking a back burner to endurance training – there are only so many hours in the day! I started training with MPower in 2010 and was instantly hooked. Boring is not a word that every comes to mind with CrossFit training. I love the intensity and the variety of the workouts. I love the strength that I have built over the years, both physically and mentally. I love the community that we are all a part of at CrossFit 100 by MPower. I find it very inspiring to see each of us striving to reach our goals, dramatically improving our fitness, and having a great time doing it. It seemed a natural next step to begin coaching in this area as well. I have recently completed my Level 1 CrossFit certification and am already looking forward to diving further into the CrossFit world and learning all that I can. I am excited to share what I have learned and help you to achieve your goals.
I’m the “new guy/coach” at CrossFit 100…but don’t be fooled by all the tattoos….I’m a really nice guy, haha! My name is James Taulbee, I’m from Baltimore, MD; and I am currently stationed in Milwaukee. I have been in the military for 14 years now, my first 7 years (1999-2006) were in the US Marine Corps and currently (2006-Present) I am in the US Army. I’m infantryman and combat veteran of multiple locations worldwide. I have been active in sports and coached sports/conditioning most of my adult life. My sports background prior to CrossFit includes football, wrestling, track and field and bodybuilding. Unlike most people, I found my way to CrossFit because of an injury. After years of wear and tear on deployments and in sports, I ended up with a back condition called spondylolisthesis. Without going into the specific details (feel free to ask about it if you’re interested), I went from being a gym rat to being unable to stand or walk for longer than 5-10 minutes at a time. Even sleeping was difficult, as the pain kept me awake most nights. Nothing I tried helped….medications, 3 epidural shots in my spine, physical therapy, etc; I was still in pain. The doctors finally said surgery was inevitable, and I didn’t want that. I started looking for alternatives online and I kept running into success stories via this crazy workout…CrossFit. I blew it off at first thinking it was another multi-DVD/do it at home/P90 whatever. After I discovered online you had to actually go to a facility to do it, I figured I would give it a try. I walked into CrossFit York in York, PA in September 2011 and fell in love with this sport. To this day, I have not had that surgery….I am pain free….and I am stronger, faster, and have more endurance than I did when I was a 22 year old infantry Marine. I am a CrossFit level 1 certified trainer, a CrossFit Strongman trainer (yes that means atlas stones, kegs, etc….its fun and not as scary as you think..I’ll show you), and a certified CrossFit Judge. Part of what I love about this sport of CrossFit is that it is universally scalable…anyone and everyone can do this as long as you have the motivation to get here. Whether you are 17 or 70, male or female, athlete or non-athlete….this is for you and you will have fun while getting in the best shape of your life. Marcela and I are a good team because I have ONE goal for myself and the athletes of CrossFit 100 and it’s a goal Marcela shares…..Be stronger tomorrow than I was today, be stronger next week than I was this week, be stronger next year than I was this year. Can’t wait to work with you all and feel free to contact me any time!
